National Chief Imam’s Visit To Christ The King Parish

History was made on Sunday the 21st of this month (April) when the National Chief Imam Shiekh Dr. Osuman Nuhu Sharubutu attended Mass at the Christ the King Parish in Accra ahead of his centenary birthday celebration on Tuesday. He and his entourage were welcomed by the Parish Priest, Rev. Father Andrew Campbell. The gesture by the Chief Imam is undoubtedly laudable as it cements the  peaceful co-existence between Muslims and Christians. Sheikh Sharubutu over the years has demonstrated beyond all reasonable doubts that he is a man of peace and one who believes in unity and peaceful co-existence of all religions. Even at a time a negative prophecy was given against him which resulted in some Muslim faithful attacking one of the branches of the man of God who gave the prophesy, the Chief Imam called them to order. The singular act of focusing the  celebration of his birthday to visiting churches to foster good relations between Muslims and Christians has been commended by most Ghanaians and the international community at large. He has been described as a gift to the nation looking at the role he has played in ensuring there is religious tolerance in the country. It is a fact Ghana has not experienced any serious religious upheaval, thanks to the good rapport between the various religions and this, the Chief Imam can be credited as having played a role. It is significant that at a time some countries are experiencing religious intolerance resulting in the bombing of churches and Mosque killing innocent souls, none of the sort has  occurred in Ghana.
Tuesday’s lecture to commemorate the 100th birthday of the National Chief Imam is well deserved. It is said a nation that does not honour its heroes is not worth dying for. While commending the Chief Imam for his exemplary leadership, Vice President Dr. Bawumia who was the guest speaker at his birthday lecture urged religious bodies as well as all Ghanaians to learn to tolerate one another. Shiekh Dr. Osuman Nuhu Sharubutu born on the 23rd of April 1919 has achieved a lot in his role as a Moslem Cleric. Notable among them are the role he played in establishing the office of the National Chief Imam in Ghana and partnering government to facilitate two national holidays for Moslems on the official calendar of the country. He received an honorary degree from the University of Ghana in 2006  The Chief Imam has lived a life worth emulating and should be a role-model for all Ghanaians.
