Ghana Police Service Week

The Ghana Police Service for the first time in the history of the security institution is observing Police Week. The observance of the “Police Week”, which started on Saturday 24th November 2018 with the Community Walk ended last Friday 30th November 2018 under the theme “Renewing Police-Public Partnership for Community Safety”. Among other things it was aimed at enhancing effective co-existence between the Police and the citizenry to promote safer communities. Throughout the week Police Officers across the country, have engaged the public through various forms with education on road safety, holiday safety, child safety and crime prevention generally. To end the Police Week, there was a “Police Memorial Day”, an event commemorating Police Officers who died in line of duty. It is fascinating to observe that the leadership of the Ghana Police Service has recognised the urgent need to promote a healthy relationship with the public they serve as a security institution. It is also wort

Disaster Reduction in Ghana

As efforts are being made to reduce disaster across the world, Ghana on the other hand continues to record human induced natural disasters. For instance the Burkina Faso Bagre Dam disaster in the Northern, Upper East and West Regions, the Kumasi church fire and the Bosomtwe District Soil erosion disaster caused by structural vulnerability of residential settlements were some of the human induced happenings. One can also recall the contaminated tilapia disaster in the Eastern Region precisely Asutsuare area of the Volta Lake and the gas explosion at Krofrom in the Tafo Municipality of the Ashanti Region which claimed some lives. Lack of a Legislative Instrument for NADMO to enforce building permit laws is a major barrier to the implementation of the second UN General Assembly International Instruments on Disaster management, known as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The worldwide establishment of disaster and emergency management organisations was triggered by the 1989

The 2019 Budget Statement And Issues Raised

The 2019 budget is the third financial statement and economic policy of the NPP administration since the party took over power in 2017. The budgets were christened variedly. The first was dubbed ”sowing the seeds for growth and jobs” while the second one was themed ”putting Ghana back to work” or Adwuma budget. This year Government titled the budget; A stronger economy for jobs and prosperity. This year’s budget revealed a number of socio-economic issues as government promises to continue efforts aimed at making the lives of Ghanaians better. It is pleasing to the ear to hear the finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta announce that government has paid all the National Health Insurance Scheme arrears accumulated since 2014. This will bring a great relief to the NHIA as it has been wobbling because of lack of funds to pay service providers and to undertake other operations. The sustainability of the NHIS and its funding remain unresolved. Payment of arrears is just a tiny albatross lifted off

9th National Delegates Congress of NDC

The ninth national delegates congress of the NDC will go down in the history of the country as well as the party itself as the longest with delegates having to spend more than 48 hours in expectancy. The congress could also be said to be the biggest ever in the annals of the country with more than nine thousand delegates from all over the country. It is however said all is well that ends well. At the end of it all, the party emerged stronger, more unified and poised to capture power from the ruling NPP in 2020. With a dedicated and determined National Executive having been elected, one has no doubt in the mind that the NDC is battle ready to slug it out with the other political parties in the race to occupy the Presidential seat in the next general election. With Executives like Samuel Ofosu Ampofo as National Chairman, Alhaji Awudu Sofo Azorka, Said Sinare and good old Sherry Ayittey as Vice Chairpersons with unassailable Johnson Asiedu Nketsia as General Secretary and smooth talki

Africa Women’s Cup Of Nation: Can Black Queens Host And Win?

The 11th edition of the TOTAL Africa Women’s Cup of Nation starts tomorrow, and Ghana, hosts the rest of Africa for the first time since the inception of the tournament. The senior female national team, the Black Queens who are in Group A, will be playing at the Accra Sports Stadium with The Fennecs of Algeria, Les Aiglonnes of Mali and the Indomitable Lionness of Cameroun. The Cape Coast Stadium will host 10 time winners, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, Nzalang Nacional of Equatorial Guinea, Banyana Banyana of South Africa and the She-polopolo of Zambia all paired in Group B. Quite strangely, even though Ghana has missed out just once since the maiden edition in 1991, the Queens have never won the trophy. Ghana were runners up in 1998, 2002 and 2006. The Queens again placed third in 2000, 2004 and 2016. However, this years’ tournament should provide a great opportunity for Ghana to break the jinx and annex the elusive title for the first time. The Black Queens have been in camp since A
